south of France hike at St Quinis begins :

First of all who is St Quinis? Its cult dates back to the 6th century.

Originally from Vaison la Romaine, he would have taken advantage of care pasage in the countryside of Besse and Gonfaron to make abandon the pagan cults. and to create the first churches dedicated to Christ.

The chapel dedicated to him dates from 1849. The priory would have replaced a sanctuary dedicated to a local deity, Gonto or Gontès. Legend has it that on St Quinis’ feast day, there was a procession across the country. the inhabitants had to clean in front of their homes and the statue and its procession passed in front of the doors.

So a curmudgeon who refused to clean, rode up the hill on a donkey. The latter tumbled down with his master. Locals said St Quinis punished him.

As for the beautiful walk to the chapel, it takes about 1 hour. The panorama is fantastic and the walls of the chapel lined with ex-voto.
